Visit
to Arab
Women's Media Center in
Jordan
January 7/14, 2005
Two members of the AEI University Youth Group as
well as the AEI Youth Coordinator participated
in “the second Arab Oriental youth meeting –
Media programme” organized by the Arab Women’s
Media Center in Amman in the period between 7
and 14 January 2005.The meeting took place at
the Al Quds Milia Hotel. Five Arab countries
participated: Syria, Egypt, Palestine, Iraq and
Lebanon.
In the first day the participants had a meeting
with Mrs. Mahasen Al Imam, the AWMC Director,
and got to know the participants from the other
Arab countries. Mr. Farouq Al Jariri and Mss.
Rozin Abu Shaqra were coordinators.
In the second day the opening ceremony took
place in the presence of the Governor of Amman;
Mr. Nidal al Hadid. All the participants had
tasks. Some of them were in the reception
committee; others led the invitees to their
seats, others were responsible for discipline
and control. There where three speeches; one
from Mrs. Mahasin al Imam, the other from one of
the participants – Mss. Salwa from Egypt - and
there was a speech by Mr. Farouq Al-Jariri.
Several sessions addressed different topics, for
example; “the role of Arab youth in practicing
democracy”, “Arab youth and political
developments”, “the concept of Real Media”,
“writing journalistic stories”, “national
agreements to combat discrimination against
women”, “Youth immigration and shame education”.
The program also included tours to Jordanian
tourist sites such as the Dead Sea, Petra and
the Old City of Amman. We visited the Al Dustour
and Al Ghad newspapers, in addition to the AWMC
premises where all the participants were divided
into two groups. One evaluated the meeting and
the other made a development plan for the
upcoming youth meeting. Another group wrote an
“Arab Oriental Youth Statement”.
We were introduced to the AWMC publications,
books and documentary films, such as “Women are
coming” as well as the AWMC website.
The programme was very interesting and
informative on both educational and personal
levels. We met new people and made new friends.
This gathering was also a chance for us as young
people to get to know more about our youth
problems and needs. We also developed a new
youth on-line communication structure to help us
to develop our communication skills.
