International, with the
assistance of the Prague-based
Pontes Institute, organised the
first seminar of the
project "Promoting Exchange between
NGOs, media and researchers from the
Middle East and new EU member
states" in Prague, Czech Republic,
31 January - 5 February 2006. The
seminar was attended by 28 civil
society activists, journalists and
researchers involved in social
change from five Arab countries of
the Middle East (Egypt, Jordan,
Lebanon, Palestine and Syria) and
from five new member states of the
European Union (Czech Republic,
Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and
Slovakia). The participants
reflected on the role of civil
society, media, research and
religion in the social
transformation processes taking
place in their respective countries
and regions,
and explored possible topics for
further collaboration between civil
society, journalists and researchers
from (Central) Europe and the Middle
East. A second seminar will be
organised in Beirut, Lebanon, for
late summer 2006.
