Workshop
on the Palestinian Curriculum |
The Arab Educational Institute in Bethlehem and in cooperation with the
Advocacy Office of the YMCA, organized a
workshop entitled “The Representation of the New
Palestinian Identity in the New Palestinian
Curriculum”

This workshop came as an outcome of the initiative by the Arab
Educational Institute: Open Windows - an
affiliated member organization of the
International Peace Movement (Pax Christi) and
in cooperation with the Advocacy Office of the
YMCA. Many educational institutions, schools and
Palestinian figures who have knowledge,
experience and expertise in the field of
education, advocacy and the strengthening of the
Palestinian identity, attended this workshop at
the Golden Park Resort in Beit Sahour.
At the
beginning of the workshop Mr. Fuad Giacaman, AEI
Director welcomed the the guests and offered his
congratulations and greetings to the attendees
on the occasion of the Holy Month of Ramadan. He
also gave a very short presentation about AEI
activities. Mr. Giacaman spoke about this AEI
annual tradition of celebrating Ramadan Eftar
Meal in order to strengthen the brotherly and
sisterly and national unity among the one people
of Palestine. Mr. Fuad highlighted the
importance of discussing the subject of identity
in this workshop. Mr. Adnan Atiyah, the Advocacy
Office Director of the YMCA spoked about the
Palestinian identity in the present text books
and the ways for promoting this identity.

Mr. Adnan said,
“There is a recent change though it is a partial
one after the implementation of the new school
curriculum. He focused on enhancing the status
of this Palestinian identity in the present
educational curriculum particularly in its
presentation of our religions, history, culture
and geography. A deep discussion and an open
dialogue followed Mr. Adnan’s introduction.

This public
hearing workshop will be followed by three
teachers and educators workshops in the near
future. The coming educational encounters will
be part of a joint campaign to be co implemented
by the AEI in Bethlehem, the YMCA and Itjah (The
Arab Palestinian Organization in Haifa).

This whole
project has been sponsored by ICCO (the Dutch
Development Organization). At the end of the
workshop, Mr. Fuad Giacaman thanked the audience
for their excellent contribution in making this
workshop a success.

Mr. Giacaman
invited all the participants to a Ramadan Eftar
meal as an AEI annual tradition. Before the
Eftar meal, Mr. Atallah Al Danoun an Islamic
Religious Educator teacher and Father Elias Abdu
recited consequently two Islamic and Christian
food prayers.
