SUMMER SCHOOL 2009 - THE ART OF BREATHING

Call for international volunteers

AEI’s summer school is a two-week event in the last week of June and the first week of July which involves about 100 Palestinian young people (6-30 years) and women from the Bethlehem and Ramallah regions of Palestine in a wide variety of programs.

We need international volunteers to join this program as trainers and organisers for sessions in arts, sports, crafts, music and other creative skills.

In 2009 the summer school will deal with the psychological consequences of the closures imposed upon Palestinian society. We will embrace and celebrate the concept of “breathing” in its mental, physical and spiritual dimensions, as opposed to the suffocation Palestinians feel as a result of checkpoints, Wall and settlements with which they are surrounded. The results of the sessions will show actions, feelings and images that show the humanity and sumud (steadfastness, resilience) of Palestinians and establish new bonds of friendship with people abroad.

If you would be interested to contribute to the school and the theme of breathing, and are prepared to cover your personal costs, we will be happy to design a series of sessions geared to your skills and interests. You would lead the session with the support of a Palestinian facilitator.

AEI will arrange for the volunteers to have some days out with AEI groups and visit historic or cultural sites through our cultural tourism programme.

In advance, we can communicate about possible days off and the intensity of the courses, which is variable. In general, we propose to have 5-10 sessions of two hours..

Issues relating to materials needed, equipment and media will be dealt with in further correspondence.
