Sumud Festival
Bethlehem, 15-16 July 2010
Organized with the Sumud Story House
near Rachel’s Tomb
Arab Educational Institute (AEI-Open
Windows),
Bethlehem
Call for volunteer artists
Background: the Rachel’s Tomb area
The Wall has a deeply negative
impact on the human rights situation
in Palestine. In Bethlehem, hundreds
of Palestinians live in a degrading
and desolate environment near the
Bethlehem-Jerusalem terminal and the
Wall surrounding Rachel’s Tomb.
A two-day Sumud Festival will
support the sumud or
steadfastness of the citizens in
those areas. It will create
attention to the infringements on
human rights in Palestine as a
result of the Wall and other imposed
systems of control, and encourage
interest in Arts among Palestinian
youth and women.
International and local artists and
arts trainers are invited to
contribute to this Festival, 15-16
July 2010.
Festival program
July 15, Thursday:
During the first festival day, small
workshops will be organized along
the Wall around Rachel’s Tomb.
Palestinian youth of different ages
and women will be invited to share
and perform various kinds of arts,
such as graffiti painting, popular
and classical music performances,
circus activities, and creative
handicrafts. The workshops will use
the Wall as stage, screen,
background and surface.
July 16, Friday: The
second festival day will feature a
late afternoon-evening concert near
the Wall with musical performances
by some 20 local and international
music groups and performers.
Balconies and roofs will be
creatively used for inspiring
musical dialogues over 100 meters
crossing various walls around
Rachel’s Tomb.
