AEI-Open Windows News

Cultural performance at the Wall around Rachel’s Tomb, Bethlehem

“UNDER THE WATCHTOWER”

July 5, 2008

AEI-Open Windows organizes a public performance and celebration on Monday July 7, 18:00 – 19:00 near the Sumud Peace House close to Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem, Palestine. The program, to be performed at the Wall and with a military watch tower as part of the “stage”, is intended as a statement of life and persistence (sumud) opposed to the fragmentation and death for which the Wall stands.

The program is as follows:

  • Evi de Jean, Belgian singer who works and resides in the Netherlands will sing two Dutch songs: Branding (Surf) and Tijd van Toen (Looking back). She will be accompanied on the classic piano by local musician Nubar Vosgueritchan.
  • The English-language song Zeitun (olives), composed by Evi de Jean, will be performed by a Palestinian choir group of AEI brought together for the occasion.
  • In a traditional diwan set up under the watchtower, youth will read a poem of Mahmoud Darwish; a Palestinian folklore story, and prayer-wishes sent from abroad.
  • AEI director Fuad Giacaman will explain about the educational meaning of sumud in Bethlehem and Palestine/
  • The Artas Folklore Center Dance Troupe will complete the event with a Palestinian dabkeh performance.

For more information about Evi de Jean, see her website www.evidejean.com.

The event marks the end of AEI’s summer school. Products from the summer school will be on display on and besides the Wall, including drawings made by youth and wall tapestries completed by two women’s groups.

The Sumud Peace house is located next to the Tabash Souvenir shop on the Hebron Road, 200 meters from the foot passenger exit on the Bethlehem side of the Jerusalem-Bethlehem checkpoint.
